Yamaha G231 nylon guitar (used, c. 2000). Freshly strung up and set-up and adjusted. These guitars play nicely and have a surprisingly sweet, charming tone. They are also laminated, and therefore very durable and much more tolerant of changes in humidity. Unlike most other guitar makers, Yamaha’s laminated tops are made of all spruce (vs a spruce veneer over layers of “mystery wood”). A center piece of spruce is sandwiched between two ultra-thin layers of spruce, resulting in a super strong, light and stiff piece of wood that seems nearly impervious to most of New England’s notorious guitar-destroying weather, and it maintains the punchy, detailed response and tone of a solid-top guitar. They are also ridiculously affordable!
